FOOTFALL

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, total footfall in the UK increased by 3.7% last month according to data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC ) and Sensormatic IQ. Total retail footfall in the UK declined by 13.3% last month on a year-on-three-years (Yo3Y) basis. BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday was highly visible across the high street as retailers and brands looked to boost early Christmas spend. Shopper numbers across Britain on Black Friday rose 3.7% YOY - the increase was driven by high streets, where footfall was up 13.9% YOY.** However, shopper numbers on Black Friday were still down 21.3% on pre-pandemic levels.** The volume of Black Friday payment transactions rose 3.2% compared to 2021.***

CHRISTMAS

Despite campaigns for Black Friday and the unusually timed World Cup, Christmas was in full swing throughout the month of November. With forecasts looking gloomy for retail against the backdrop of the cost-of-living crisis, campaigns to celebrate the season were of course evident. Campaigns based around charitable giving were also noticeable as retailers and brands show sensitivity to the economic uncertainty many are facing.
