RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

UK footfall decreased by 0.4% in August year on year, up from -3.3% in July. The start of the month saw riots which affected the sector. Retail parks saw footfall levels rise as some continued to avoid high streets and shopping centres. Towards the second half of the month, footfall improved, perhaps boosted by a slight easing of price inflation, fair weather and back to school and bank holiday trade.

BACK TO SCHOOL

UK parents are expecting to spend an average of £452.40 per child including uniform, stationery and technology – the equivalent of £2.3 billion*. 76% of schools expect children to have access to their own   laptop or tablet increasing the price pressure on parents*. Escalating costs are difficult in the current economic climate;   61% of parents are worried about the cost of the items they    need to buy before the new academic year begins*.
