Every month, we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

Total UK footfall decreased by 1.7% in August year-on-year, an improvement on July’s 2.1% decline.* Cooler temperatures compared with July helped encourage shoppers back to the high street, while Back-to-School shopping also provided a boost.

BACK TO SCHOOL

According to Gekko, Back-to-School was valued between £8.82 billion and £9 billion in 2024, making it one of the most significant retail events outside of Christmas. In 2025, Worldpanel by Numerator (WBN) reported that while the overall childrenswear market for Back-to-School dipped slightly over the summer, grocery retailers grew ahead of the market at 8.4%.** Lunchbox staples also expect a spike in September. Data from early September 2025 highlighted that yoghurt was up by 26%, cheddar cheese by 24% and sliced cooked meats by 17% compared to the preceding fortnight.***
