RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month, we capture what is happening in retail – identifying key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

According to BRC-Sensormatic, total UK footfall fell 0.8% year-on-year in November, following a 0.7% decline the previous month. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) attributed the drop to consumer caution driven by rumoured tax increases and poor weather. Despite this, Black Friday sales were moderately ahead of those recorded last November, buoyed in part by higher food spending. Food sales rose by 3%, though this increase remained below the inflation rate of 3.6%.*  In contrast, sales of non-food products increased by only 0.1% year-on-year, falling short of the 12-month average growth rate of 1.6%.*

CHRISTMAS

This additional edition of Retail Eye provides a summary of Christmas activity across the high street, with retailers going all out to create a festive experience for shoppers. GlobalData predicts that Christmas spending will reach £91.12 billion over the six-week festive period (from mid-November to the end of December), averaging £1,371.44 per person. It will be interesting to see if December footfall and spend pick up after a slow start to Christmas in November.
