Outside of key seasonal activity, several trends and themes shaped the UK retail landscape in 2025. It was another challenging year as shoppers struggled with price inflation, which squeezed discretionary spending. Retail footfall also proved fragile - overall shopper traffic across stores was broadly lower year-on-year, particularly through the second half, reflecting cautious consumer behaviour and evolving shopping habits.
